The Life List

by

I didn’t understand the value of having a ‘bucket list’ or a ‘life list’ until this very moment. I’m on board a yacht sat between my life’s loves whilst my feet dangle over the Pacific Ocean. The sun beaming on my skin which 5 days into our summer vacation, is heavily tanned. I never appreciated the sunset quite so much until I watched fall from sight over the Pacific Ocean. Where water is King and we are merely passing through its vast, wide and beautiful kingdom. Costa Rica is a sight to behold. Rich in all things our creator gave us to enjoy. The air is clean and unblemished by manmade burdens. The wildlife is free, bright, colourful and wild. The language is sensual and alluring. Passionate and warm. The food is familiar, yet new and the people greet with pleasantries wherever we go. I’m smiling. I feel alive and I want more.

Yes more and here are my reasons why a Life List is a must have

  1. I want something to look forward to

The responsibilities of an adult often result in us living to work rather than working to live. Give yourself the greenlight and schedule sometime to think about all the things you want to do. It doesn’t matter how grand or minimal, it will give you some special moments to look forward to.

  1. I want to be motivated

Pen to paper = Life List. Now you have something to work towards. Some extra reasons to say no to the Saturday morning sleep in and yes to an early start to the day.

  1. I want to be active

The enthusiasm and vigour I had in my mouth became a distant memory. Writing my life list reminded me there were adventures to behold and in order to experience them I needed to get up off the sofa and into the gym. After all, a woman wants to look and feel her best on the beach.

  1. I want to improve my self-esteem

It’s a great feeling to have a list of things you’ve accomplished. Think about that feeling x100 when you’re watching the elephants up close and personal on that safari you’ve always dreamed about. Or dancing at the carnival in Rio De Janiero. Climbing Dunns River Falls. Or having a full body massage overlooking forested volcanic mountains in Bali. Accomplishing things on your Life list makes you more confident in who you are.

  1. I want to share meaningful conversations with people I meet

Have you ever been to a gathering, party or networking event where you’ve met a lot of new people? When you think back, who did you find most interesting? They were probably the ones who had great stories to tell. Of conquests you’d only hoped you have the courage to conjure up. They had done a lot of different things, travelled to a lot of different places and had a lot of unusual experiences. With your own life list you can have your own stories to tell too. Your own dreams you’ve accomplished and lessons learnt.

But just making the life list isn’t enough. A commitment from you to yourself. Loving your present self enough to become your best self. With every new accomplishment I’m dreaming up the next. Making tweeks as I discover new interests. Some things on my list can be accomplished in one day, a weekend and others over a number of years. But I’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Have I peaked your interest yet? Go on…give it a try.
